Coffee & Culture at Mario's

Two of our favourites showing their latest works at brunswick streets cultural heart

Katy Beale & Dinah Maclaren have been labouring away for some time for this joint showing of their mutual endeavours. And very exciting it is too. Katy & Dinah will show individual and collaborative paintings in oil and other media. Although landscapes are the common theme of the show, in this context the term landscape should be loosely applied as the emphasis of both painters is on the psychological effects of a scene. Maclaren's paintings examine the landscape of the Antarctic and its early explorers to this region and themes of desolation and isolation. Her atmospheric style contrasts with the narrative and colour rich approach of Beale's paintings which use images ranging from moments in a child's world to Oedipus confronting the sphinx to investigate the emotive possibility of painting. Opening Wednesday 29 November 5.30pm 'til 7pm at Mario's Cafe 303 Brunswick Street Fitzroy. Exhibition open until December 18.
For enquiries please call Dinah on 0407 836 331, Katy on 0401 357 704 or artsofar@hotmail.com.

Larissa Hjorth's mobile mash up

where the eponymous mobile phone meets art

Have you ever wondered what story can be told by someones mobile phone? What does the mobile phone “say” symbolically to others? In Larissa Hjorth's upcoming exhibition at Spacement Gallery, we see the mobile phone, this inanimate tool of virtual connectivity, come to life. Informed by travels through South Korea, Hjorth observes people increasingly dependant on these portable units of communication: the mobile phone itself becomes personified. The phone itself almost becomes the alter-ego of its bearer. The faceless, glamorised screen between the phones’ bearer and the friend, acquaintance or stranger on the other end of the line. The show runs from July 14 thru August 5. Preview 15 July 6pm. Spacement Watson Place Melbourne. For enquiries call (03) 9639 2560 or visit www.spacement.com.au.

Melbourne gets opportunity to view "Circumnavigating the Island"

Mass Gallery hosts first Melbourne showing of Ann Holt's mammoth work.

Continuing the showings of Ann Holt's "Circumnavigating the Island" piece around Australia, Mass Gallery hosted the Melbourne unveiling on a wet and windy autumnal night in downtown Clifton Hill. A broad and diverse selection of Melbourne's art glitterati weathered the elements to wonder at the effort and commitment that Ann cherished on this work. In recent years Ann has spent extended periods painting on location in remote areas of Southern Tasmania, on the edge of one of the worlds last true wildernesses. This remoteness and solitude allows her to focus on the rendering of light, mood and palette of the landscape, developing ideas and insights into the language of landscape, the picturesque and cultural identity. Ann's work makes a significant impact on the viewer, through colour, surface and atmospheric environment, reinforced by its large panoramic scale.
